If you work part-time, understanding how Social Security contributions work is essential, as they determine your eligibility for pensions, unemployment benefits, and disability allowances.
A new reform introduced in October 2023 ensures that part-time workers receive the same contribution period recognition as full-time workers. Here’s what you need to know about how contributions work for part-time employment in Spain.
A part-time contract is a legal employment agreement where an individual works fewer hours than a full-time employee.
✔ Regulated under the Workers' Statute, it specifies that part-time workers must work less than 40 hours per week.
✔ The most common part-time schedule is four hours per day (20 hours per week).
Despite working fewer hours, part-time employees have the same rights as full-time workers, with proportional salaries and vacation entitlements.
Part-time employees are entitled to the same benefits and protections as full-time workers, including:
💰 Salary & benefits – Proportional to hours worked.
📅 Vacation days – Calculated based on hours worked.
📜 Job security – Employers must inform part-time workers about full-time job openings.
📈 Equal contribution recognition – Since October 1, 2023, part-time work counts as a full workday for Social Security benefits.
📌 New Rule (Effective October 1, 2023):
✅ Equal treatment: A 4-hour workday counts the same as an 8-hour workday for qualifying periods.
✅ Better access to benefits: More workers will now meet the minimum contribution requirements for retirement and unemployment.
✅ No impact on benefit amounts: The actual pension or benefit amount still depends on the contribution base (salary level).
The new contribution rule applies to several key benefits, including:
🏦 Retirement pensions
⚕️ Permanent disability benefits
👨👩👧 Death & survivors’ benefits
📅 Temporary disability payments
🤱 Maternity & paternity benefits
Workers who contributed part-time before October 2023 can also benefit from this reform if they apply for a new benefit.
🟢 The requirement remains the same as for full-time workers:
✔ Minimum 15 years of contributions to receive at least 50% of the regulatory base.
✔ You must contribute for at least 360 days within the last 6 years (same as full-time).
✔ Contributions used for previous unemployment claims cannot be used again.
✔ The minimum wage (SMI) in Spain is €1,134 per month.
✔ A part-time worker (20 hours per week) earns half of this amount: €567 gross per month.
The new Social Security contribution rule significantly benefits part-time workers, ensuring they qualify for benefits faster. However, while workdays count equally, actual pension and unemployment amounts depend on salaries and contribution bases.
To optimize future benefits, workers should stay informed about contribution bases, voluntary contributions, and retirement planning.
